My therapeutic approach contains several modalities such as CBT, DBT, and discussing childhood traumas and intergenerational cultivation. My approaches originate from my own upbringing and childhood experiences. As a Black woman from Spanish Harlem, I have delved into a myriad of different cultures, encounters, and ways of life. This has allowed me to be unbiased in nature, and treat everyone with the same level of respect and integrity.

I am a family therapist with over 20 years of experience. I provide supervision and training as well as therapy, and am a senior faculty member at the Minuchin Center for the Family. I work with individuals and families experiencing the range of issues that bring people into therapy: depression, divorce, substance abuse, behavior problems, relationship issues, adolescent issues, etc. I work with children, adolescents, and adults; and see individuals, couples, and families. But, as a family therapist, I am always concerned with the many ways in which our families and our significant relationships impact on our lives.

Are you struggling to let go of past hurt or are you stuck? Are you struggling to move forward from a past relationship? Do you keep choosing the wrong partner, but you don’t know why? Are you feeling single and shame? Are you feeling alone in your pain? Is shame, anger, low self-esteem, resentment, sadness or anxiety holding you back? Do you notice that you’re engaging in the same maladaptive behaviors as your parents? Do you want to better understand who you are and why you cannot break your patterns? Do you need new tools to help you cope with the challenges of life? Allow me the opportunity to support you

I see individuals from 18 - 88 years of age, from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious backgrounds and LGBTQIA. I have been trained to treat patients with depression, anxiety, chronic pain and illness, obsessive-compulsive, eating disorders, anger, drugs, alcohol, post traumatic stress, interpersonal, relationship and intra psychic issues. I believe that the choice to start talk therapy is a brave and empowering one, a moment where you are choosing to invest some time to learn more about who you are and where you've come from - knowledge you can use to improve your life. It doesn't matter if you are dissatisfied with your personal and/or professional relationships, struggling to identify your life goals, pondering the meaning of life, or stuck in what feels like an endlessly repeating loop of challenges -- knowledge is power.

Therapy begins with a curiosity. Perhaps you want to understand why you are feeling the way you do, you feel stuck in a particular pattern or set of circumstances, or you are experiencing a pull to deepen your understanding of yourself and your relationships with others. There are certain universal threads we all share - our desire and need to connect with others, a call to create, our desire to discover a sense of purpose and make our unique mark, and our desire to find joy and presence. I am here to guide you in finding meaning and fulfilment where you seek it.

It can be a struggle to find someone who understands you for who you are and the complexities of your experiences. We all come from different walks of life, which shape how we see the world and how the world sees us. No one's walk is without trials and tribulations, which can have traumatic impacts on our mental and physical health. Everyone deserves to be heard and understood by someone who recognizes what they've been through and can help them foster personal growth and self-confidence.

Many people begin therapeutic work with me because they are ready to make a change but do not know how or where to begin. Sometimes work stress, life changes, relationships and family problems can become stressful or hard to manage. This can lead to depression, anxiety, or unhealthy ways of coping. I will help you develop your own insight and understanding as we establish new skills and strategies for sustaining change. I will listen attentively and respond fully. My style in therapy is active, calm, and non-judgmental; I work to create a confidential space to explore the issues and challenges that are most important to you.

Therapy is a process and I know it takes a lot of courage to seek it out. I believe that all of us have in us the right tools to change our lives and achieve our goals. Sometimes, all it takes is a little guidance and support from someone who might have a different perspective. As a licensed clinical social worker, I provide expert services working with adults and adolescents to strengthen their ability to overcome stress, grief and loss, anxiety and depression using specific interventions like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, coaching, and mindfulness training.

I work with couples, individuals, teens and kids. My 25 years of experience and many forms of training allow me to work with a range of issues. Increased awareness of thoughts and emotions allow us to examine patterns and behaviors causing distress and frustration. Finding new understanding and perspective creates new possibilities in relationships and our capacity to meet life challenges. This is a deeply personal journey and finding the right therapist to offer safety, courage, support and insight is a key part of the process. My approach is psychoanalytically grounded. My couples work is based in Emotionally Focused Therapy.

To be an alive person on this planet in this political moment asks a great deal of us all. We are all tested uniquely, and as members of families and communities, in our ability to grow and embrace the hardships and sorrow that we face in our every day lives. And in the face of those challenges you have come this far because of your very own special brand of survival. Whether you are feeling stuck in your relationship(s), struggling to overcome structural or systemic barriers, or finding the weight of your thoughts and emotions insurmountable, know there is a great deal of strength inside you and I hope we can unlock it together.

An ideal client would possibly seeking out support and guidance when struggling with a current experience or still processing an experience of the past. The clients goal will be to work on their selves with the help of the therapist to better understand their own needs and wishes. Their goal would be to navigate and heal themselves so that they may work on learning to accept themselves.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Brooklyn?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
